International Bartenders Association (I.B.A.)
57th. I.B.A. General/IBA Meeting
Caribe Hilton Hotel, San Juan
PUERTO RICO 2008
Education Development Committee – Annual Report
The Education Development Committee (E.D.C.) of the I.B.A. congratulates the President and members of P.R.B.A (Puerto Rico Bartenders Association) for hosting the I.B.A. meeting and W.C.C. in San Juan, Puerto Rico 2008. The EDC Committee would also like to take this opportunity to welcome our Executive Board and Committee and look forward to assisting and collaborating with you all in the coming years.
I.B.A. Training Centres
This year has again been another good year for our Educational objectives. We have witnessed successful IBA training centres held in South America (Brasil) in Europe (Italy) and Far East (Singapore) and shortly I expect North America and Southern Hemisphere will cover the 2 missing continents with IBA Education.
I took part on behalf of the EDC Committee in the IBA Training Course 2007 in São Paulo (Brasil). I was very impressed with the enthusiasm shown by those taking part in the IBA Training Course.
Personally I would like to see more young Bartenders from other South American countries attending the Course. However I know the hard work that President Vianna has had to make this happen, but unfortunately it has not happened yet. I think that the lack of success in obtaining greater participation of Barmen from other South American countries is due to the fact that the National Associations give very little collaboration.
As you know 47 barmen took part in the course, of which 44 were Brasilians coming from various Brasilian states, therefore the problem of distance cannot be put forward, when there is interest in improving oneself professionally.
I would take the opportunity to congratulate the ABB Education Officers for the good work they have done, even when working with a group of 47 participants (another record for the IBA regarding training).
IBA Cocktail Booklet
As you already know there was some urgency in producing this for the congress in Puerto Rico, however there was a delay in receiving some of the information requested. During this time it was decided to restructure the IBA Bartenders courses, so we put the booklet on hold for immediate release, this was to enable us to produce it in a more professional format and to align with the new courses.
E.D.C. Study
During this year we have continued working on a variety of projects on your behalf and whilst the Social Responsiblity Programme was the most urgent, there are others we have also ventured into.
The first meeting of the EDC Committee was in Singapore in April this year, where we took the opportunity to revise the text of the Social Responsibility Book. This also marked a very special occasion for the IBA/EDC as this was the official signing of the agreement with Dimensions Education Group on the 29th. April, and also the official opening of the IBA office and the IBA Training Centre.
The EDC Committee were very privileged to attend this very auspicious occasion, one that the EDC see as a stronger union with Educational Institutes and giving credibility to the courses we are developing for current and emerging countries as members of the IBA.
Our second EDC meeting was in Lisbon, Portugal on September 12-14th. being held at Fontana Park Hotel. During this meeting the final aspects of the Social Responsibility programme were discussed and decided on for final approval and printing.
It was also at this meeting that we had an opportunity to invite the NEOs of Europe to join us for a seminar on Train the Trainer, as this is a pre-requisite for the teaching of SR. Some NEOs already hold sufficient skils or equivalent qualifications so did not attend, for those that did, they found it a very rewarding and educational experience.7 countries attended, 10 participants and newly appointed approved trainers.During our recent visit to Portugal the EDC also forged a new relationship with Faro Hospitality School in the Algarve.
This was to present our Social Responsibility course for future training at the school.
This year as we have briefly outlined previously has been very busy and also very exciting too with a variety of projects to develop on your behalf all of which have been both a challenge and very enjoyable.
Social Responsibility: Update
After the IBA Congress in Taiwan we continued to develop and refine the programme to its current development and of course it is now ready to teach as some have already found out. There are currently 5 countries already teaching SR, Singapore being the first. The programme will have a few glitches to begin with, as at the moment it is only in English, but that we are working on as we speak. This we feel will make the project a more desirable package for all IBA Guilds and Associations to present.
There were major changes within the Bacardi Company on the resignation and departure of Eelco van Ravenswaaij the former SR project manager, however with a number of meetings attended by the IBA President Mr. Derrick Lee everything has been retained by his successor Anne Marie Touw. They are remaining true to the MOU and the teaching of SR to all the IBA Guilds and Association members, so this will give us an opportunity to update this programme as times, laws and attitudes change.
IBA Bartender Courses
These courses have now been completely revamped and changed to fall into line with current worldwide educational policy and funding.
The previous courses which were written and compiled by the former EDC chairman Brian Page and his committee, served us well for a number of years, but now is the time for change.
The courses were formerly known as the
- Induction Stage 1
- Intermediate Stage 2
- John Whyte Course Stage 3
They have now been renamed the
- The IBA Certificate in Professional Bartending
- The IBA Diploma in Professional Bartending
- The IBA Master Bartender
The envisaged structure will be
Certificate 48 hours (16 hours Practical 32 hours Theory)
This can be taught in any combination 12 x 4 6 x 8
Diploma 80 hours (10 full days workshop x 8 hours)
(Currently being developed)
Master Bartender 120 hours (4 x 8 full days workshops twice a year)
(the rest of the hours are to research and create a dissertation for industry)
The John Whyte Course will still continue and shall have a cross credit aspect to completion of Master Bartender.
Certification for these courses will be through the IBA Office in Singapore.
The Certificate course is now ready to go and available for those wishing to participate.
